alwaysbeenasmilerSo yesterday I read an article (and posted my rage on facebook) about the 30 most useless playable characters in video games. One of them happened to me my first ever video game love of all time? "Who is this?" you inquire. WELL I WILL TELL YOU RIGHT NOW, It is Magus Zeal from Chrono Trigger. Alot of people who have gone the distance with me are probably thinking/saying, I thought that was Citan Uzuki from Xenogears. Nope, Citan was my college crush-- Magus happened when I was a sophmore/junior in high school (he happened the same year that Setzer Gabbiani also happened to me, yet another love of mine).
And Magus? Totally not useless. I mean here was the option in the game, either get Magus in your party and have a killer awesome spell called "DARK MATTER" -or- you can shun him and then Frog becomes a human AT THE VERY END OF THE GAME, POST CREDITS- To me the choice was completely without a doubt natural. Fuck yeah, give me Magus-- yeah, I understand if you are a DIE HARD FROG fangirl-- but sorry, gotta take the extra Deeps to my party.. and when he casts spells, it looks like he was doing some awesome vogue-movement.
But this also hurt my soul a little bit because while I may have RP'd Citan Uzuki more, I think that as far as characters go, Magus has the one-up because I've had a fanfic writing in my head, think pure Butterfly Effect involving Magus and an original character (before y'all scream Mary Sue at me, this character has faults and isn't a self insert and I'm not even apologizing. Y'all don't have to read this fic in my mind, so LET ME HAVE THIS). But the characters have this personality within my brain scape, and of course it's a crossover with another game (actually two games ever since I decideded to give Schala a boyfriend named Cid (*shifts eyes away from FFXIV and feigns innocence*). Let's just say the emotional attachment is there.
My other ship with Magus if I took away my fanfic-verse would be a trifle problematic-- so I don't think about it too much, except it only makes sense in a deep flowers in the attic sort of way that only being a child of Queen Zeal would warrent. (y'all are good at guessing, bet y'all can figure out that ship)
Now for a list-- so you can see exactly where the characters fall in their own. Going to do this with video game male characters only, I will do my top 10 female characters at a later date.

Link, of course. I love Link forever in basically every possible way and every possible version, though I haven't even played half the games out there, I'm not actually that much of a gamer. (And extra-extra love for Dark Link, Shadow Link, and Fierce Deity Link. Handsome hero stuff *and* angst and darkness? Yes please!)
Zidane from FFIX is on the list also, though in a kind of slant-wise way. It's not so much him, although I do like him, as he was a major early inspiration for one of my most important personal characters.
Hmmm. I feel like I should pick somebody from FFVI, because I adore that game and have played it up, down, and sideways so many times by now. But I'm not sure any single one of them super speaks to me. It's the whole glorious mess of everybody that I love. I could never bring myself to play the game through without making absolutely certain I could get everybody in the party.

8/2/19 15:13 (UTC)As for my list, gah...it is hard to come up with one right off the top of my head for some reason! XD I will say that I think Jowy from Suikoden II would have to be on it because his story just really sticks with you, as well as Ramza from FFT for similar reasons.
Hmm, this type of list might be one me and Breyzy could steal for a meme actually...so I might have a more detailed one on our DW at a later date! :D

Sitting on the spot thinking of my favorite male characters in video games gave me Yuri Hyuga, Luke fon Fabre and Urdnot Wrex. There's plenty of other characters I like, but those are three that I've liked consistently.
(I'll also give an honorary mention to Ryudo of Grandia 2, because young me thought he was cute and he has a cool bird.)

I will always point to Sonic Adventure 2 why I love Shadow the Hedgehog. Tragic boys who are utterly devoted to their (sometimes dead) best friend is my weakness. ;; Homura Akemi is a female example.
I love Loid for his adorkableness, inner strength, and character development, and Jeff Andonuts for being so humble yet one of the most badass characters in the game. Poo for being a grumpy softie and I can go on and on...
