It is actually really good-- and sort of lays the groundwork for Zestiria. I also like the misfit band of rag-tags that this game has in abundance. It takes the opposite route that Zestiria did in terms of "Let's fill up the party with do-gooders". If you want the full yin-yang balance, you'd do well to give Beseria a go, I don't think you'd be disappointed!
I feel like the story elements weren't as strong as some other games I've
played. The characters were what kept me going, but the story itself was
kind of confusing and not well fleshed out until the very, very end.
Most of the Tales games I've played, the characters have kept me going (with the exception of Tales of Hearts which I just couldn't get into). Zestiria didn't feel like a Tales games to me because of the fact there were some key items missing, one of them being that I felt the conflict with the main boss, Heildalf was pretty forced, and you didn't get a good feel for his minions like Symone until the very end.. and even then you didn't understand what motivated her to follow him.
A lot of really good innovations, but once again-- I think they were wanting to get Zestiria out as soon as possible (they were running off the high with Tales of Xillia 2 and they needed a sort of cash cow. They did think with Tales of Beseria and it really does show!
Yeah, I didn't get the motivations or why all of the drama was happening in
the first place. Like, it was just sort of happening out of nowhere? So
it's good that the story is stronger. :)
